On November 14, 2012 a solar eclipse will be visible in Northern Australia and the Pacific Islands. Very few people have the opportunity to view a total solar eclipse as the shadow only covers a very small area of the Earth and you must be in a limited zone to see the moon cover the entire face of the sun. Seeing a total eclipse is perhaps one of the most spectacular astronomical phenomenons that you will ever see. Being in the right spot is essential, and on November 14, 2012 the easiest spot to view the total eclipse will be in Cairns, Far North Queensland, Australia. The 2012 total solar eclipse will occur when the moon passes in front of the sun and blocks it completely, forming a shadow on the earth. For this to occur the sun, earth and moon come in a straight line in their orbits and it will seem like the moon has covered the sun. Two to five solar eclipses occur each year, and no more than two of those can be total eclipses. The 2012 Total Solar Eclipse on November 14, will best be viewed from Cairns, which is on the path of totality of the eclipse (as shown by the red line in the track map to the right). Totality (with the Sun 14 degrees above the horizon) will occur just after sunrise at 6:39am Australian Eastern Standard Time (EST) which is the local time zone in Cairns. Expressed in Australian EST or local time, the total eclipse begins in Cairns at 6:38 am on November 14th, 2012. Totality will last just over 2 minutes after which it will move out across unpopulated areas of the South Pacific. The best place to view the eclipse will be somewhere elevated facing east, or on the beachfront, and our Beachfront View apartments and beach frontage suit that requirement perfectly.
As the 2012 Solar Eclipse will attract an international audience, booking your accommodation early is highly recommended. |
